The Role of the Black Communities Education Support Group
In the Bristol area, many parents of Black children of Afrikan-Caribbean, South Asian and Afrikan origins are concerned about the education of their children and the educational system in general. It is the case that many children succeed in school but a considerable amount of children are under-achieving.
The following are some important facts that you should know:
- There has been a significant increase in the number of Black children that have been excluded from Bristol's Schools;
- While some Black children are generally performing well, the majority of them are under-performing and are under-achieving in areas such as GCSE 5A* - C.
If you want to be more active and supportive in helping to lower the school exclusion rates and increase the achievement levels among black children in the Bristol area - then you should join the Black Communities Education Support Group*.
BCESG was set up to provide support to black parents in 1988. It aims to provide general advice, information, consultation sessions and parent forums to enable parents to have a better understanding of the education system. BCESG has provided an out of school programme in the past to enable children to achieve in the area of GCSE 5A* - C. The organisation cannot, however, continue as a group without your support.
The Annual General Meeting (AGM) takes place in December, and provides you with an opportunity to be updated on the group's developments. This gives you a chance to have your say on educational issues and supplementary support. Learn how you can help children achieve by planning for The Pauline Weise Annual Achievement Awards (PWAAA) in December, as well as joining in all the group's activities, and being a member of the Management Committee.
This is your organisation and you are very important in ensuring its development. It is important for you to attend and participate in the activities organised by BCESG. Please let other black parents know about the organisation and how important it is for the wider community to support it.
It's your chance to put something into the community and your children's future. If you are interested in becoming a Member or Committee Member please fill out the Membership Application Form (PDF format - requires Adobe Reader - free download available here), and contact us for a copy of our latest Annual Report.
Should you require any assistance or support please telephone 0787 6270498 or email bcesg@ukonline.co.uk.
* NB. The term "black communities" refers to Afrikan, South Asian, Afrikan/Caribbean, Chinese, Vietnamese, and Other Minority Ethnic non-white groups who share a common experience of discrimination on account of their colour or cultural origin.
