What does a Doula do?
Doulas do what women have done for thousands of years: they hold a hand, wipe a brow, sing the old songs, pray the prayer, give a hug and wish other women well on the journey they must take. Doulas help women to remember their bodies. Their's is a deep belief that women's bodies have been designed to give birth. Confidence in this one truth can help a women do what she needs to do to birth her baby.
Birth is a unique experience as is the care that a Doula provides. Doulas enable women, and often the people around them, to re-connect with their unique birth-experience. The women and their partners are escorted through the journey in a safe, secure, supportive and nurturing environment. This is achieved by re-establishing a birth enviroment that supports the whole person: physically, emotionally and spiritually. Doulas provide support, advocacy, unconditional love and a compassionate, continuous presense.
Birth Doula
Many women seek support, love and compassion for their birth preferences and respect for the remarkable transformation that birth elicits. A Birth Doula can make a powerful difference. The services offered are flexible and cater for the needs of the mother-to-be and family. The support that is offered may vary from woman to woman, and it could be a first birth or baby number four.
The presence of a Doula at birth affects not only the birth experience but also the experience of the woman and her partner for a long time afterwards. It can increase the chances of successful breastfeeding in the months to follow. It can give the parents more confidence in their parenting ability and also lessen postpartum depression. One of the most valuable lessons that Doulas can teach women is that they are designed by nature to give birth. Confidence in this one truth can help a woman do what she needs to do to birth her baby safely and with awareness.
